Meet Cristina Hoyt

ACID REFLUX? GLUTEN FREE? CELIAC DISEASE? WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO EAT? THESE WERE THE THINGS FLOWING THROUGH MY MIND WHEN I FIRST STARTED MY OWN HEALTH JOURNEY THAT ULTIMATELY LED TO ME TO DR. HELSTROM.

The truth is about 7 years ago, I wasn’t feeling so well. I was traveling a lot for my first job out of college and was getting sick all of the time. I had stomach pain and I was feeling sensitive to foods that I previously had no problem eating. My body was changing and I had no idea what was going on. All I knew was something was wrong. I did what anyone would do, I went to my family doctor. I was diagnosed with acid reflux and was prescribed anti-acid medication. I was told to take everyday for the rest of my life. This didn’t sit well with me. Life was going to be long, I was just getting started. Acid Reflux? Gluten Free? Celiac Disease? What am I supposed to eat? These were the things flowing through my mind when I first started my own health journey that ultimately led to me to Dr. Helstrom.

Unsatisfied with this solution, I started doing my own research and decided it was time to take matters into my own hands.  I put down the anti-acid medication and I did my first elimination diet. Within three weeks, I felt so different. My energy was better, my skin was brighter, I had lost the bloat, my stomach pain had finally gone away. My friends and family started asking me what I was doing differently and started asking me for advice on their own health issues. In a way, I suppose you could say that I turned into a healthy food advocate and health coach without even realizing it.

Fast forward a few years later, I was formally diagnosed with Celiac Disease. Boy was that a blow. I felt lost. I had already made huge changes to my diet and I still wasn’t feeling well and now I needed to give up gluten. An American Staple. So, back to the Doctor I went and I was told that I needed to avoid gluten (i.e. breads, pastas, etc.). I was even told that the gluten free food wasn’t good, but it’s livable as a diet. Livable as a diet? Again, I was young… life was going to be long. This wasn’t acceptable. And it shouldn’t be for anyone.

So, back to research and I learned so much. From that day on, my approach to elimination diets and being gluten free is that you don’t have to sacrifice taste and flavor to live a healthy lifestyle. And that’s what I preach and teach each of my clients. Let’s change the conversation from what we can’t have to the bounty of foods that we can have.   

I vowed to help others so they don’t have to be alone in their diagnosis, like I was. I obtained my certification as a Health Coach from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in 2014 and started my business six months later helping people navigate their health. In January 2016, I began the course work to obtain my Masters in Clinical Nutrition from the Maryland University for Integrative Health. I met Dr. Helstrom after I obtained my Health Coach Certification and she has been an amazing resource to m me and my clients. I am honored to be apart of her team and have watched her patients have incredible health transformations as a result of our work together.
